Việc áp dụng kỹ thuật vi xử lý  và đo lường đã làm tăng tính năng và thông số của thiết bị đo lên rất nhiều, đã mở ra cách giải quyết các vấn đề mà trước kia chưa đặt ra. Các bộ vi xử lý đã trở thành một bộ phận thiết yếu của các thiết bị đo. Có bộ vi xử lý các thiết bị đo có thể đa chức năng hơn, đơn giản hoá việc điều khiển, tự động điều chỉnh, tự động lấy chuẩn, tự động kiểm tra, làm tăng thêm độ tin cậy của các thông số phép đo, cho phép thực hiện tính toán, thống kê kết quả của phép đo nhanh chóng và đa dạng hơn, như vậy đã tạo ra được thiết bị đo lường lập trình tự động. một phần của cuốn sách này dùng để trình bày những nguyên tắc và khả  năng của các thiết bị đo có bộ vi xử lý.</subfield>
