   <subfield code="a">Từ thời xa xưa, khi các sản phẩm chính của thương mại quốc tế chủ yếu là các nông sản, khoáng sản hay các mặt hàng thủ công đơn giản như đồ gốm hay vải dệt... lợi thế cạnh tranh trong thương mại của một sản phẩm so với sản phẩm khác chủ yếu là nhờ vào những đặc tính và chất lượng riêng biệt mà các điều kiện địa lý như khí hậu và địa chất của các khu vực địa lý mang lại. Các vùng địa lý với các địa danh nổi tiếng đã mang lại lợi thế cho các sản phẩm cùng loại như pho mát Roquefort, rượu vang Bordeaux của Pháp, pha lê Bohemia của Cộng hoà Séc, xúc xích Frankfurter của Đức, Oliu vùng Kalamata của Hy Lạp, thịt bò Scotland...Ngay cả ở Việt Nam, những sản phẩm quen thuộc với mọi người dân nhờ gắn kết với các địa danh như vải thiều Thanh Hà, bưởi Đoan Hùng, chè Tân Cương, nước mắm Phú Quốc, gốm Chu Đậu... Các địa danh đi kèm với các sản phẩm đã gợi cho người tiêu dùng nhớ đến không chỉ nguồn gốc xuất xứ của sản phẩm mà còn nắm bắt được cả đặc tính, chất lượng đặc biệt của sản phẩm nhờ nguồn gốc địa lý đó. Chỉ dẫn địa lý dần trở thành một bộ phận vô hình của sản phẩm nhưng góp phần làm gia tăng giá trị cho sản phẩm và có vai trò ngày càng quan trọng trong đời sống nói chung và trong hoạt động thương mại nói riêng.</subfield>
