Whitehead không ngần ngại coi quan niệm đó là “một trong những quan niệm nguy hiểm, sai lầm, và tai hại nhất từng được đưa vào lý thuyết giáo dục”. Đối với ông, “trí tuệ không bao giờ là thụ động; nó là một hoạt động không ngừng nghỉ, tinh tế, có tính thụ nhận, đáp ứng lại với những kích thích. Bạn không thể trì hoãn đời sống của nó cho đến khi bạn đã mài nó bén nhọn”.</subfield>
