<subfield code="a">The effects of the learning of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) to English learners’ pronunciation has been researched and reported in available literature. In this thesis, the results of a study on the impacts of the learning of the International Phonetic Alphabet on adult learners’ pronunciation in the context of a private language center in the Mekong Delta, in Vietnam are presented. The study aims to find out (1) the effects of the learning of the International Phonetic Alphabet on adult learners’ pronunciation and (2) learners’ perceptions of the learning of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) in their classrooms. This experimental study followed a two-group pre-test and post-test design. There are seven learners in control group and eleven learners in experimental group. They are non-majored English learners who are mostly university students. The duration for the treatment was ten weeks in a communicative course. Research instruments used in the study included (1) a pre-test and post-test on learners’ pronunciation, (2) the questionnaire on learners’ perceptions of the learning of the IPA and (3) individual interview of learners’ perceptions of the learning of the IPA. The results demonstrated a significant difference in pronunciation improvement between the two groups. Participants in the experimental group gained more than those in the control group. In addition, most learners in experimental group held positive perceptions of the learning of the IPA in their pronunciation.</subfield>
