   <subfield code="a">Sự phát triển mạnh mẽ của công nghệ vật liệu đã tạo ra nhiều loại vật liệu mới có tính năng đặc biệt như: chịu mài mòn, chịu nhiệt, thép không rỉ, thép có độ cứng cao.... cho ngành cơ khí. Việc sử dụng các phương pháp cắt gọt truyền thống để gia công vật liệu này gặp nhiều khó khăn, nhất là khi cần gia công tạo hình phức tạp hoặc kích thước nhỏ, siêu nhỏ. Để khác phục khó khăn trên, các phương pháp gia công dựa vào hiện tượng vật lý hoặc phản ứng hóa học  đã ra đời. Đặc điểm chung của các phương pháp này là: + Độ cứng của dụng cụ gia công không cần cao hơn độ cứng của chi tiết gia công( gia công được vật liệu có độ cứng cao, vật liệu sau khi tôi).+ Gia công được chi tiết có hình dạng phức tạp, kích thước nhỏ, siêu nhỏ.Giáo trình trình bày nguyên lý, phạm vi ứng dụng và ưu nhược điểm của các phương pháp gia công mới, giúp cho sinh viên các trường đại học và cao đẳng kỹ thuật học tập, nghiên cứu các công nghệ mới trong gia công, qua đó lựa chọn được phương pháp gia công phù hợp trong chế tạo cơ khí</subfield>
