Achoimre:This paper is to study semantic and syntactic features of English and Vietnamese idioms containing verbs of possession. We have used the combination of descriptive and contrastive methods in this study. Moreover, both qualitative and quantitative analysis is made use of investigation 554 samples in English and Vietnamese from various linguistic books, dictionaries, short stories, novels and newspapers. The findings show that idioms containing verbs of possession have remarkable syntactic and semantic features and that there are some similarities and differences between the two languages. We also dealt with the implications for teaching and learning of idioms as well as for further study.
