Tóm tắt:The paper deals with interrogative sentences in English and Vietnamese, especially on syntax and pragmatics. It is aimed to explore all the strategies used for interrogative sentences in English and Vietnamese and to find out their similarities and differences in syntatic and pragmatic features in the two languages. The data of the study collected from many conversations, newspapers, films, short stories in English and Vietnamese will be described on the syntactic and pragmatic ground and contrastively analized under a quantitative, qualitative approaches. Differences and similarities of syntax and pragmatics between two languages in interrogative sentences to questions are also pointed out to lead to the conclusions and implications at the end of the thesis. The thesis also suggests some guidelines and further researches on different fields of interrogative sentences in English and Vietnamese so that teachers of English and learners of English can, to some extent, study deeper the interesting areas of interrogative sentences. The differences and similarities also help learners have a better awareness in using interrogative sentences in English and Vietnamese communication. Hopefully, this research is useful to those who are teaching and studying English as well as Vietnamese.
