| Yhteenveto: | This study mainly investigated the semantic features of metaphorical
expressions in tennis commentaries in English. With the analysis of instances
of metaphor in English sport commentaries, this thesis also aimed to point out
the similarities and differences in terms of the semantic mechanisms between
figurative metaphors and conceptual metaphors used in tennis’s commentaries
to offer some suggestions for learning and translating the metaphorical
expressions for commentators and translators. The study collected 300
samples from English tennis commentaries then analyzed the data on
syntactic and semantic aspects based on the basis of the traditional view and
contemporary view of metaphor. The findings about semantic and syntactic
features of metaphor expressions and the semantic mechanisms for two main
types of metaphor: figurative metaphor and conceptual metaphor are partly
proposed to contribute to better the awareness of learners, commentators and
translators in learning and translating a tennis commentary in English
