Description
Summary:In recent years, Project-based Learning (PBL), a student-centered pedagogical strategy aiming at promoting communicative competence and essential skills, has gained momentum in the academia as well as in higher education setting worldwide. This research project investigates the implementation of PBL in promoting intercultural competence (IC) among students at University of Foreign Language Studies, The University of Danang (UD-UFLS). It seeks to explore the potential of using PBL in developing IC amongst the students. It also aims to examine the perceptions of UD UFLS students towards developing intercultural competence and identify the benefits and challenges perceived by the students in integrating PBL in developing students’ IC. Data for this research were collected through survey questionnaires and interviews from 130 students across all faculties at UD-UFLS. The findings indicate that UD-UFLS students generally perceive themselves as having positive intercultural competence, but areas for improvement could be identified, especially the need for more opportunities to engage with diverse cultures. The study also reveals that PBL can be an effective approach to foster intercultural competence amongst the students. It enhances their communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills in multicultural settings, while improving their cultural knowledge, critical thinking, and personal qualities like patience and responsibility. Additionally, PBL expands appreciation for diversity and stimulates interest in levering cultural awareness and language competence as well. However, the implementation of PBL to develop IC amongst students at UD-UFLS faces challenges, including time commitment, difficulty in assessing intercultural competence, limited support, and barriers pertaining to language and cultural differences. This research hence introduces the Cultural Kaleidoscope Project, a comprehensive initiative aimed at improving students' language acquisition through a deeper understanding of cultural values. The project includes printed and e-version materials with trilingual content (English, Vietnamese, and another language) and utilizes social media platforms like Facebook or Fanpage for promotion. The findings of this investigation have significant implications for educators and administrator in the higher education sector in Vietnam, highlighting the potential benefits of adopting PBL and emphasizing the importance of creating a supportive environment for promoting intercultural competence within institutions like UD-UFLS
