Description
Résumé:The thesis aims at investigating conceptual metaphors in English and Vietnamese editorials, namely through comparison and bilateral contrastiveness, and the author points out the similarities and differences in using war metaphors in English and Vietnamese on linguistic features, namely syntactic and semantic features by means of metaphorical expressions. The thesis studies linguistic features of metaphor uses in English and Vietnamese editorials in the light of the Conceptual Metaphor Theory raised by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) with the famous work “ Metaphor We Live By”. The data of the thesis were collected from English and Vietnamese newspapers, magazines, editorials and internet and analyzed on syntactic and semantic aspects based on the basis of the traditional view and contemporary view. With the findings in editorials, semantic and syntactic features of metaphor are partly proposed to contribute to better teaching and learning English as a foreign language, specifically to better the awareness of learners in translating and writing an article effectively.
