Tóm tắt:This study attempts to reach a thorough understanding of English verbs of volition through the exploration of such lexical verbs as want, wish, hope, intend, need, desire, expect, suggest, together with modal verbs like will, shall, would like. In the study, the notions of volition and volitional verbs are presented and discussed in literature review. The viewpoints on volitional verbs in English of some linguists such as Graham Lock, Sidney Greenbaum and Randolph Quirk, Collins Cobuild, .... are also mentioned in theoretical background on which verbs of volition in English and their Vietnamese equivalents are collected, analyzed and classified into group. The most important and significant problem, the similarities and differences between English verbs and Vietnamese verbs, in view of syntactics, semantics and pragmatics are presented in order to help learners have better use of language in communication. On the basis of the findings, some teaching implications consisting of teaching strategies and some suggested exercises have been put forward. Finally suggetions for further study are made for anyone that is interested in this problem to continue studying to perfect this research.
