Description
Summary:This is a qualitative and quantitative study on the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic features of style disjuncts in English and Vietnamese. A contrastive analysis is made to find out the similarities and differences between the two languages in terms of structural and lexical characteristics of SDs, their semantic features such as showing subjectivity, high commitment, forces and barriers, their pragmatic characteristic, namely the modification of illocutionary force in hedging and reinforcing the illocutionary force of the utterance, the relations between syntactic rule and pragmatic features of SDs as well as the constraints for SDs. The study also makes some suggestions for language teaching and learning.
