Sumario:A British consultant to the UN on environmental and population issues explains that coastal development is overwhelming the world's coastal areas; that overpopulation, pollution, and the conversion of natural ecosystems to human uses are threatening wetlands, coral reefs, fisheries, and other natural resources; and that few governments have been able to create and implement effective and rational coastal management plans. He concisely summarizes the problems and management options, profiles 13 coastal areas under pressure, and provides three case studies of successful programs. He assumes no scientific background.
