This book concludes that strikingly little is known about the effectiveness of antenatal care for maternal health. Underlying this uncertainty is lack of information about the aetiology, pathogenesis and natural history of even some of the commoner complications of pregnancy such as hypertension; about the levels of patterns of causation of maternal mortality and morbidity in developing countries; and about the biological efficacy of treatments in current use
