Περίληψη:The workshop brought together 23 fisheries scientists/socio-economists and population experts with experience in demographic and population research on fishing communities and in fisheries management, development and administration in the Philippines, Malaysia, Bangladesh, India, Tanzania and Senegal, with threefold purpose of: *) Prentation and discussion of the findings of recent studies of population characteristics of coastal fishing communities and their relationship to the level of fishing effort and to the level of exploitation of fisheries resources and formulation of recommendations for incorporation of research findings in fisheries education and training. **) Providing advice to countries on designing and introducing special population policies and programmes for fishing communities in support of food security and sustainable exploitation of fisheries resources with the ultimate objective of improving the standard of living of coastal fishing communities and of enhancing their role in sustainable exploitation of fisheries resources and their contribution to food security at the national and global level. ***) Formulation of recommendations for institutionalization of population research on fishing communities for consideration of demographics and population research findings in fisheries planning and management.
