It provides a comparative cross-sectoral and international perspective on the industrial organisation of a global industry that is of vital importance to our civilisation. It explains differences in the competitive structure of the sectors in the industry, including concentration and the degree of vertical integration, as a function of key attributes of each sector, including the technological intensity of the processes of extraction and refining and the abundance and richness of the deposits world-wide. It elaborates a bargaining process model to explain differences in the degree of foreign ownership and control in each sector as well as the distribution of benefits and costs. |
