Induced spawning and larval rearing for the sea cucumber Holothuria nobilis (Selenka, 1867) : Graduate thesis. Major: Aquaculture
Holothuria nobilis (Selenka, 1867) is one of the economically important species for live hoods in many countries. However, an increase in demand for the species has led to the depletion of wild stocks. The introduction of this species in aquaculture is required to reduce fishing pressure, but the...

However, an increase in demand for the species has led to the depletion of wild stocks. The introduction of this species in aquaculture is required to reduce fishing pressure, but the knowledge of inducing spawning and larvae rearing is still limited. Therefore, this study was undertaken to develop breeding and larval rearing techniques for the development of H. nobilis aquaculture. The broodstocks were collected from the wild and induced to spawn by using two methods. The first method was thermal stimulation, the water temperature in the spawning tank was reduced from 27-28°C to 23-24°C by the addition of ice. The second method was the combination of thermal stimulation and algal stimulation (addition of 2g of dry algae spirulina in the spawning tank). The larvae obtained from induced spawning were reared and their developmental stages, growth, and survival rate at different stocking densities and diets were described. Three stocking densities (300, 600, and 1000 larvae/L) and three experimental diets (mixed microalgae (T1), mixed microalgae, and Protein selco (T2) and mixed microalgae with Protein selco and Frippak (T3)) were tested. | ||
