After serving in 1857 in Delhi and Lucknow, the unit became a regular cavalry regiment along with the Punjab Frontier Force. It participated in the Second Afghan War (1879-1880). After the frontier operations between 1894-1898, the Regiment never served in the frontier region again, and the Punjab Frontier Force was absorbed into the Indian Army. The Regiment fought in Mesopotamia in the first world war. It was mechanized in 1938.
