Achoimre:It cannot be denied that proverbs take a great part in our daily lives. Neither can friendship. Friendship is one of the most precious gifts of life. Friendship makes life sweet and pleasant experience. Friendship is indeed, an asset in life. It can lead us to success or to doom. Proverbs in general and proverbs denoting friendship in particular are units of languages with full of obstacles which challenge the non-native English learners. For this reason, this thesis aims to investigate into English and Vietnamese proverbs denoting friendship in an attempt to find out the similarities and differences between the two languages in terms of syntax and semantics by means of contrastive analysis with qualitative and quantitative approaches. All the data were collected from dictionaries, books and websites on the internet. Moreover, some implications for teaching, learning and translation are also put forward in this study.
