Περίληψη:Based on the theories of discourse analysis, this thesis made an investigation into the discourse features of the newspaper review of the entertainment shows in English and Vietnamese in order to discover some typical discourse features and then find out the similarities and differences in terms of the layout, lexical features, syntactic features and cohesive devices between these two kinds of entertainment show reviews. The research was conducted based on the combination of a variety of methods, namely qualitative, quantitative, descriptive and contrastive analysis. 150 samples of English entertainment show newspaper reviews and 150 samples of Vietnamese entertainment show newspaper reviews were collected from the internet for recent years. The findings showed that along with some similarities, there were a number of noticeable differences. In terms of layout, ENRES and VNRES share a similar layout which consists of headline, summary, a number of figures and extension. Also, another layout shows that the entertainment review discourse in English and Vietnamese contains two main parts: “the Summary” and “Development”. However, the English summary is quite different from Vietnamese one. In terms of lexical feature, ENRES uses the attributive adjectives commonly while VNRES prefers to use the superlatives frequently. With regard to the syntactic feature, voice, speech and common structures are investigated respectively. For the cohesive devices, the thesis studies both lexical cohesion and grammatical cohesion. It is hoped that the results of this study will serve as an access to a profound understanding of English and Vietnamese Entertainment Show Review. The study will help Vietnamese learners of English to improve their writing skill.
