Sammanfattning:Due to the global status of English, there is a growing trend of individuals acquiring proficiency in the language. The global significance of English as a lingua franca has motivated individuals to acquire proficiency in the language from an early age. Teaching English as a foreign language to young learners requires a unique strategy due to their distinct traits and individual learning styles. Using songs and chants is an example. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using songs and chants in teaching English for third-graders at Tran Nhan Tong Primary School, Da Nang City. With the design of quasi-experimental research, there are experimental group and control group which were given pre-test and post-test. The participants in this study includes 76 third graders in two different English classes (class 3/1 and class 3/5) at above school. The pre-test was administrated to find out the students’ achievement before the treatment while the post-test was to find out the achievement of the students after giving the treatment. Besides, the researcher uses different lesson plans for both groups. After that, participants in the experimental group finish a questionnaire form. After executing the questionnaire, an interview was performed. The collected data were summarized and analyzed by using SPSS software version 26.0. The findings demonstrated the efficacy of utilizing songs and chants as instructional tools for enhancing the pronunciation skills of non-native English speakers. Learning English pronunciation with the use of songs and chants helps students in experimental group increase the more average point than students in control group where the researcher used the normal method to teach pronunciation. Additionally, students exhibited improvements in their listening abilities and oral proficiency, while also expressing a genuine enjoyment for the learning process, which diverged significantly from conventional methods. When students were provided with English songs and chants during their classroom activities, they iv exhibited positive attitudes towards enhancing their oral communication skills, fostering collaboration, and promoting relaxation. Due to their strong affinity for catchy lyrics and melodies, individuals are able to alleviate common obstacles encountered by students when learning to speak English, such as anxiousness and a lack of confidence. Previously, studies have mostly focused on examining the impact of songs on the language proficiency of high school students or adults in the context of language learning. There have been limited investigations undertaken on the correlation between songs/ chants and pronunciation in young learners. Therefore, due to its focus on young learners between the ages of 8 and 12, rather than extremely young learners (under 7) or adult learners, this thesis will make a substantial contribution to the existing literature. This thesis aims to examine the impact of songs and chants on language learning, specifically focusing on third-grade students. It will provide strategies for implementing courses that are entirely based on songs or chants, with the goal of enhancing children’s English pronunciation skills. Another focal point of this study involves comparing the effectiveness of song-based/ chant-based teaching methods with text-based teaching methods; therefore, enhance learners’ and teachers’ comprehension of the greater efficacy of employing songs and chants in English pronunciation classes. Finally, some recommendations were given to Ministry of Education and Training, the leaders and English teachers to take advantage and promote all the great benefits of the application of songs and chants in teaching and learning English at primary schools in Vietnam. For further researchers, this study can be replicated in different parts of Da Nang City in order to compare the findings with this study, and to see the similarities and differences amongst the same age groups in different parts of the city. This study can also be reproduced on different age cohorts to examine the effectiveness of using songs and chants in English classes.
