Summary:In this introductory part we describe the basic GNU/Linux system usage and the various tools and utilities which are used with it. In particular, the use of the GNU/Linux command-line, Bash shell scripting, and external programs such as find, tar etc. are explained. Secure communication tools OpenSSH and VNC are also described. Since open-source software is written using computer programming languages we describe the commonly used open-source programming languages, including C/C++, FORTRAN, Ada, Java, Python, Tcl/Tk, Perl, Common Lisp, Scheme, Erlang, Smalltalk, Ruby, Scala, X10, and Lua in this chapter. Example for each of these languages and their salient points are described.
