Tóm tắt:This explorator y study, a Ph.D. disserta tion compl eted at the Uni versity of Western Ont ario in 2013, ex amines the materia lly embed ded relation s of pow er between library users a nd staff in public librari es and how building design regula tes spatial behavi or acc ording to organi zational objectives . It considers three publi c library buil dings as organizati on spaces ( Dal e & Burrel l, 2008 ) an d deter mines the extent to which their spatial organizati ons reproduce the relation s of pow er between the library and its publi c that originat ed with the modern publi c library building type ca. 19 00. Adop ting a multic ase study design, I conducted sit e visi ts to three , purpose fully selec ted public library buil dings of simil ar size but vario us ages. Site visits includ ed: bluepr int analysis; organi zational docum ent analys is; in-d epth, semi -struct ured interviews wi th library users and library staff; cognitive mapping exercises; observ ations; and photog raphy.
